World Blood Donor Day (WBDD) 2013

World Blood Donor Day was celebrated on 14 June this year to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood.

With the slogan “Give the gift of life: donate blood”, this year’s campaign, the 10th anniversary of World Blood Donor Day, focused on the value of donated blood to the patient, not only in saving life, but also in helping people live longer and more productive lives.

This year, the National Blood Service, Ghana’s theme for the celebrations was ‘Every Blood Donation is a Gift of Life

Activities:

  1. Public Education on Blood Donation (Print and Electronic Media) – Accra and Kumasi
  2. Awards for highest blood donation by students of Senior High Schools – Accra, 14 June 2013. 1st Prize – Ghanata SHS, 2nd Prize – Ashaiman SHS, 3rd Prize – Tema Technical Institute and 4th Prize – Wesley Grammar SHS
  3. Schools Essay Competition on theme – Greater Accra, May – June 2013. 1st – Antoinette Techie-Menson of St John’s Grammar School, 2nd – Jennifer Folli of St John’s Grammar School and 3rd – Joyce Dela-Edem Klu of Emit Electronics Institute
  4. Awareness Procession – Accra, 14 June 2013
  5. National Event – Accra, 14 June 2013
  6. Health Walk – Kumasi, 15 June 2013
  7. What-Do-You-Know competition for blood donor groups – GBC Radio, GTV 16 June. 1st Prize – Blogging Ghana; 2nd Prize – Rotaract Club of Adentan, 3rd Prize – Scancom Ghana Limited (MTN), 4th Prize – C.Y.B of the E.P Church and 5th Prize – Dodowa Keep-Fit Club.
